New Water Safety Guidance Arrives Just in Time for Summer

The AAP refreshed its drowning prevention advice for the first time since 2019

The American Academy of Pediatrics published updated drowning prevention guidance in the June 2026 issue of Pediatrics.

The big idea is "layers of protection" — no single step keeps kids safe, so families stack several together: close supervision, four-sided pool fencing, swim lessons when a child is ready, life jackets, and knowing CPR.

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4, but these everyday habits make a real difference.

With the 2026 policy statement out and summer underway, this is the moment to make water safety counseling routine. Tailor anticipatory guidance to each child's age, water exposure, and drowning risk — fencing and touch supervision for toddlers, life jackets and open-water rules for older kids and teens. A quick, specific reminder at the summer visit reinforces the layered approach.
