New Drowning Prevention Guidance Lands Just in Time for Summer

The AAP updates its water safety playbook for families and clinics

The American Academy of Pediatrics has released updated drowning prevention guidance in its June 2026 issue of Pediatrics, its first major refresh since 2019.

The core message for parents is reassuring and simple: no single step prevents every drowning, so families should stack several "layers" of protection — close supervision, swim skills, barriers like four-sided pool fencing, life jackets, and knowing CPR.

With pools and lakes opening up, now is a great time to review your family's water safety plan with your pediatrician.

With the AAP's updated drowning prevention policy now published, this is a timely moment to weave water safety into early-summer well visits. Counsel families on layered protection, screen higher-risk patients with autism or epilepsy, and keep a short list of local swim and CPR resources ready to hand out.
